Introduction
There are meetings and meetings. I’ve been to so many over the years covering various subjects, most have promised much but one just senses that nothing will be achieved, others simply a total waste of time.
Last September I went along to a Meeting that was to change my outlook on the presentation of the Arts in Rotherham. For that I am mighty thankful to Gav Roberts.
At this particular Meeting there were so many talented and creative people from across the Art genres, all excited by the prospect of potential new projects, one of them being the development of an Open Mic Poetry night in Rotherham.
Up to this meeting I had been ploughing a path with the support of some great musicians developing resources and Events for Acoustic musicians, using the Acoustic Rotherham label as, for the want of a better term, a Brand, but never really breaking through into Rotherham’s main stream of art activities.
Fired by the enthusiasm generated by this Meeting I was determined to find out more about how the bits of the Rotherham jigsaw came together and in doing so was able to introduce many of Acoustic Rotherham’s strongest supporters to what became known as the Rotherham Open Arts Festival Fringe, holding Wednesday Concerts and Saturday Brunch sessions along with a couple of Workshops.
As my knowledge built I was drawn slowly into the Rotherham Arts Community and as understanding of how it connected dawned I have been able to make modest contributions to the debates.
Rotherham currently has a dynamic and vibrant talent looking for outlets to exhibit their work; that applies across all the genres.
Having been asked to put together a programme for the Rotherham Arts Fringe Festival again, and this time with plenty of time to organise it, and having listened to the wish lists of many of the artists in Rotherham initial plans started to look very ambitious, it became clear that tester events need putting together along with some serious funding.
To get funding a properly Constituted Organisation has to be in place, and while I would have loved to have done it under the Acoustic Rotherham Brand name it was clear that such a name might just give the impression of narrow approach to the projects, and that is certainly not the case. Rotherham Art Events (RAE) was therefore born and a team of talented individuals came together to contribute to the Events.
It is critically important that it should be understood; RAE is not a in competition with any other Art Organisation in Rotherham, indeed we would take the view that we are in clear and absolute Partnership and complimentary to the Council, ROAR and RCC Ltd and it’s subsidiaries.
RAE has been formed specifically for the purpose of adding to the Rotherham arts economy by generating more funds via Fund Holders and Commercial sponsors to be directed in full for Rotherham artists of all genres.
We hope that our aims and objectives demonstrate this, along with the ambitious Programmes that we are developing for the Festivals.
